The team decides to shift from a reactive to a proactive stance, aiming to anticipate and counter the Custodians' moves.
Chapter 81
Planting Doubt
Cobalt leans back in her chair, a thoughtful frown creasing her brow as she stares at the myriad of screens before her. "It's been eight years since AI-agents were introduced," she muses aloud, "and now they're everywhere. We've become so dependent on them; it's like they're a part of us."
Across the room, Felix nods in agreement, his eyes still fixed on his own screen. "They're embedded in every facet of our lives. It's almost impossible to imagine daily life without them now."
In a separate corner, Skyler taps a pen against his chin, lost in thought. His mind races through the implications of their widespread use. "AI-agents have become the backbone of the middle class," he says, finally breaking his silence. "But they're also our biggest vulnerability if the Custodians are able to manipulate them."
The conversation turns to Shadow, who's been quietly listening. "We need to start spreading rumors, creating doubt," he suggests, his voice carrying the weight of experience. "We have to make people question the security of their AI-agents."
Felix perks up, "I can start seeding some professional social media platforms with discussions. I’ll avoid the usual ones like Facebook and Twitter; we need to focus where it counts, with the movers and shakers, not with the Baby Boomers talking about supposed conspiracies."
“I’ve been thinking along the same lines,” said Cobalt. “We can enlist some friendly hackers to create a small botnet to disseminate viral content on social media that subtly raises questions about the safety and privacy of AI-agents. A few horror stories about AI-agents running amok should sow a few seeds of doubt among the general population.”
As the team talks about specific examples of how to disseminate these rumors, Shadow's inner thoughts drift to darker territories. Are we any better than the Custodians? he wonders. Manipulating public opinion, creating fear... But he shakes off the doubt. It's for a greater cause, he convinces himself … however, he can’t shake his reservations about using the same tactics as the Custodians.
Suddenly, Felix, after hours of meticulous work, announces that he has found a pattern in the mysterious messages infiltrating their network. "It's like a digital fingerprint," he explains, "and I think it's coming through one of our own AI-agents."
Skyler, intrigued by this development, leans forward. "That's our way in," he says, his mind racing with possibilities. "If we can trace it back, we might just find our mole or at least how they're getting to us."
Chapter 82
Ghosts In Our Midst
In the dimly lit room, Felix's was furiously typing, his eyes intensely focused on the screen. Cobalt, equally absorbed in her work, sits across from him, her expression a blend of concentration and concern. "We're close to tracing this hack," Felix murmurs, breaking the silence.
In the corner, Shadow shifts uncomfortably. The discussion about manipulating public opinion regarding AI-agents weighs heavily on him. "Are we crossing a line here?" he muses, speaking to no one in particular, his voice tinged with doubt. "Creating fear... it's what they do."
Rayne, appearing on a nearby screen, adds his perspective. "The digital fingerprint of the intruder suggests that he has high-level access, something that will allow him to proceed beyond standard tampering. It's sophisticated, targeted."
Cobalt nods, processing the information. "We need to consider all angles," she says. "Could this be SiAmerica screwing with us, or is it the Custodians coming directly at us?"
The group pauses as they consider consulting Zone Ghost. They hope the rogue AGI might shed light on whether such infiltration is a tactic used by the Custodians. The unspoken consensus, however, is that Zone Ghost is it’s own entity and is not to be completely trusted.
Suddenly, Felix's attention sharpens. "Wait," he exclaims. "There's an anomaly here. It's... it's coming from Rayne's AI-agent."
The room falls silent. Cobalt's eyes widen in realization. "I was supposed to disable Rayne’s AI-agent when we uploaded his consciousness," she whispers, her voice laced with guilt, “but I forgot to do it until just now.”
Rayne's digital image flickers with what seems like confusion. "My AI-agent... compromised?"
Felix nods grimly. "It appears so. This could be how they're accessing our network."
Cobalt, taking charge, initiates Protocol Ghost, calling for an emergency meeting that leaves no digital fingerprints. "We need to address this immediately."
The team gathers in a secure digital room, each member reflecting a mix of shock and urgency. "If Rayne's AI-agent is compromised, we need to isolate it," Skyler suggests. "But we also need to find out how much they know and how they hacked his agent."
"We can use this," Shadow interjects. "Turn this breach to our advantage, perhaps mislead them."
Cobalt nods in agreement. "Let's brainstorm. We need countermeasures and fast."
Chapter 83
Countermeasures and Consequences
The revelation that Rayne's AI-agent had been compromised sent a chill down her spine. "I should have anticipated this," Cobalt muttered to herself, frustration evident in her tone. Her mind raced with the implications of this oversight.
Felix leaned against a nearby desk, his expression grave. "Obviously, we need to isolate Rayne's AI-agent immediately. It’s now a Trojan horse inside our system."
Skyler, standing by the window, gazed out into the night. "This breach is more than just a security lapse," he reflected inwardly. "It's a violation of Rayne's memory, his legacy. This takes the concept of deep fakes to an entirely new level."
Meanwhile, in another corner of the room, Shadow observed the team silently. His mind was ablaze with thoughts about the Custodians' reach and cunning. "They're always one step ahead," he mused, a sense of unease settling over him. "How much do they really know about us?"
Cobalt’s fingers paused over her keyboard. "We can't just disable Rayne's AI-agent," she said, her voice tinged with emotion. "It's deeply interconnected with all of his memories, which is all that we have left of him. We need to find a way to cleanse it, to secure it without losing him entirely."
“What about your backup copy of his memory database?” asked Lizzy.
“I thought of that,” said Cobalt, “but the flaw that allowed the intrusion is part of that backup as well. In any event, if we want Rayne back we’ve got to figure out where the weakness is in his code.”
Felix nodded in agreement. "I'll start working on a countermeasure, a way to purge the compromised elements without damaging the core data."
The team worked through the night, their efforts a mix of technical prowess and emotional resolve. Cobalt focused on securing their network, patching vulnerabilities exposed by the breach. Felix delved into the complex task of cleansing Rayne's AI-agent, his screen a blur of code.
Skyler, meanwhile, couldn't shake the feeling of being watched, of being outmaneuvered. He pondered their next move, being the group’s ‘elder’ weighed heavy on his shoulders. The Custodians had shown their hand, but what was their endgame, and was he up to countering it?
As dawn approached, Felix let out a tired sigh. "I think I've managed to secure Rayne's AI-agent," he announced, his eyes weary but determined. "But we'll need to be vigilant. This won't be the last time they try something like this. And we have Zone Ghost to worry about also."
Cobalt looked up from her console, her expression a mix of relief and resolve. "We need to be proactive," she said. "We can't just keep reacting to their moves. We need a plan to take the fight to them."
Chapter 84
Tightening Defenses
Cobalt, with a stern look on her face, initiates a crucial meeting in their virtual headquarters using the Ghost Protocol. The room, a digital construct, mimics the comfort of a physical space. The tension in the air is palpable.
"We need to address this AI-agent issue head-on," Cobalt declares, her voice echoing slightly in the virtual room. "These agents are more than just tools; they're integral to our personal lives, yet they've become our Achilles' heel."
Felix chimes in with some specifics. "Just last week, an AI-agent at a law firm leaked sensitive case details, ruining a high-profile lawsuit. And there's the case of a surgeon whose AI-agent failed mid-operation, causing irreversible damage to the patient. I know that these things been around for a while now, but how much do we actually know about their security. And who has access to this sensitive data without our knowing about it?"
Turning to Rayne’s avatar, Cobalt's face softens slightly. "Rayne, we need to analyze how your AI-agent was compromised. We can't risk such exposure again."
Rayne, his digital avatar reflecting his solemnity, nods in agreement. "I've been thinking about it non-stop," he admits. "I'll dissect every line of my code if I have to. I can’t let this happen again."
Skyler, who had been quietly listening, speaks up with a sense of urgency. "Our focus should now be on preemptive strikes. We've been reactive for too long. It's time we took the fight to the Custodians."
Nods of agreement ripple through the room. Cobalt then delegates tasks. "Felix, dive deeper into the Custodians' communication channels. We need to tap in so that we know their next move before they make it. Lizzy, keep gathering intelligence. Every bit helps."
Rayne's next steps are clear. "I'll overhaul our internal security protocols. We can't afford any more surprises. And with Zone Ghost's help, I'll try to get a read on the Custodians' next move."
